Sleep Apnea

Ahwatukee Dentistry believes that overall health is key to having healthy teeth and gums. Of primary importance in good health is quality sleep. Sleep apnea can have an impact on the quality of your sleep and, as a result, can negatively affect your overall health. If you, or a member of your family, is suffering from the effects of sleep apnea, a complementary airway evaluation with Dr. Le may help.

What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is an involuntary cessation of breathing that occurs while you are sleeping. These lapses in breathing often go unnoticed by the sleeper, but the impact on your sleep can be severe and potentially life-threatening. Sleep apnea varies in cause and severity, but the most common form of the condition is referred to as obstructive sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is caused by a blockage of the airway usually caused by the soft tissue at the rear of the throat collapsing and closing during sleep (American Sleep Apnea Association). According to the National Sleep Foundation, over 18 million Americans are affected by sleep apnea. Untreated, sleep apnea can cause problems well beyond a poor night's sleep. Fortunately, sleep apnea treatment can help you fight off the adverse effects.

Ahwatukee can Rest Better!

If you have been diagnosed with mild to moderate sleep apnea by a primary care physician or sleep physician, Dr. Le can help you sleep more soundly. The most common treatment for sleep apnea is a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. This device will help treat sleep apnea, but for some patients, this options proves to be too uncomfortable resulting in new issues with sleep!

Dr. Le is certified to provide another option besides CPAP for patients previously diagnosed with sleep apnea. Families of the Foothills Reserve and surrounding Phoenix area can benefit from a complimentary airway evaluation for sleep-related breathing problems. Through the use of oral appliance therapy, you can control snoring and OSA more comfortably!

Benefits of Oral Appliance Therapy

Oral appliance therapy (OAT) is a device worn in the mouth during sleep similar to a mouth guard or orthodontic retainer. The benefit of OAT therapy is in its convenience. OAT devices are comfortable, quiet, portable and easy to wear.

During your complimentary airway evaluation, Dr. Le will discuss the benefits of oral appliance therapy. For patients that are a good candidate for OAT therapy, an appointment can be scheduled to design your custom made appliance. Ahwatukee Dentistry cares about patients first so this consultation time is ideal for expressing concerns and asking questions regarding treatment options.
